Monday Social Experiment 2: Single Tasking

While I do multitask on a daily basis, I am personally not a fan of it. I dream of really giving my full attention to a single task from start to end. Given the kind of hectic life I (we) lead, it's a distant dream but a dream nevertheless.

So, as an experiment I would like to try out and see how it feels living like that for a day. Here is the experiment:

"Today's experiment is simple: To single task everything you do, from morning to the end of the day. So, when you walk you walk, don't listen to music on the way. When you are eating just eat, don't read newspaper. When you are working just work, don't chat with anyone (or let anyone distract you in any other way). When you are reading something online in a browser tab, just read that, don't let the gazillion other tabs and softwares running in background create a distraction. And also, don't let your mind control your thought process as you do any of the activities. Simply, single task everything. Nothing else."

I am pretty sure I will fail to do that, but I want to see how bad it turns out. Because that will tell me how far I am from the dream of mine. Will update in a few days how well it goes for me (and others who try it out with me).

Monday Social Experiment 1: Music

Here is a new series of experiments, I am trying out now. And these ones I have tentatively named Monday Social Experiments. As the name suggests these will be done every Monday and these will social in nature in that I encourage my friends as well to try them out with me, and also in that they will sometimes involve interacting with other people.

The first thing we started with was experimenting with music. Because it seemed pretty easy. I mean practically everyone I know of, listens to music on a daily basis. The experiment was also pretty simple.

"To take your favorite song and to concentrate on a single instrument playing in it or voice of one of the singers. And do that for the full duration of the song Without letting any other thought enter your mind".

I had read about this stuff somewhere, a long ago and this actually is a great way to try out a form of meditation. Another reason to try this out is that we usually associate certain feelings with our favorite songs, and those feelings and thoughts inexplicably get revoked whenever we return back to the song. At least it happens to me all the time. So, the objective of conducting this experiment was to really listen to the song without letting any emotions come in between.

So, what happened during the experiment? Well a lot of people did respond to the experiment which was fantastic. What was unfortunate was that I didn't get proper responses about how the experiments go for them. Anyway, what I found out was that a lot of people did have a tough time practicing what I had asked for. Which is exactly what I expected, because, as I said, we don't really listen to songs that way. And also, like other things in life just listening to music is not enough for us, we gotta be doing something else as well (I personally code, or create documents or clean stuffs or travel while I listen to music). Hence, we rarely concentrate on the music.

I would also say that the kind of music that we get to listen these days is really not worth our full attention anyway. It feels that the 'soul' is missing from them.

Personally speaking, I had troubles but I was able to eventually listen to songs without getting distracted by any other thought. And it's no small feat because my brain remains active and engaged with some thought or another all the time. But, it CAN be done if really given an honest try.

If someone else also tries out or has tried out the above stated experiment, please do share your experiences with us in the comment sections. Over to the next experiment.

Reserved Thoughts

A post that I wanted to write like forever and had been written like a month ago. I thought I should post it today. So, today was day 2 of the Blogging week!

Important: Since today I have reached W+P (see below stats!), I will stop posting AnOSM posts (the duplicates) here. So whenever you will see anything here from my side, from now onwards, most probably it will be for here only!

Today I have talked about teachers' in a bit negative way which may seem bad, but what I write here is true (or at least I perceive them to be true). Please read and react!

RavS' blog Week!

Alright, so I am out of shape now (habit wise) for last 3 weeks or so. And now I feel it is insanely difficult to get back to the productivity level of 3 weeks ago. But I am gonna try.

The first step is to get back into the habit of writing/blogging again. And for that to happen I would like to write and post a blog every day (on AnOSM) for next 7 days starting today, hopefully on different topics. Let's see how this goes!
